The Castillo Perelada wines 5 Fincas 2007, Gran Claustro Tinto 2005 and Finca Garbet 2005 have been honoured with Bacchus Gold awards in the latest celebration of the Bacchus International Wine Competition, Spain’s top wine event.
The Empordà bodega was therefore one of the highest placed on the tenth occasion of this competition, organised by the Spanish Association of Wine Tasters, with an entry totalling 1,520 wines and representing 23 countries. Castillo Perelada has now collected a total of thirteen Bacchus Gold awards since the contest first started.
There is no other wine-growing event in Spain that manages to bring together over four days such a list of wine-tasting experts that make up the Bacchus panel of judges. Over a hundred well-reputed names, among which figure professional wine-writers, sommeliers, oenologists and Masters of Wine, create a top-ranking selection to assess and recognise the quality of the wines participating. Three Masters of Wine, the British contingent of John Salvi and Sarah Jane Evans, along with Pedro Ballesteros of Spain, headed the blind tasting from March 16th to 29th.
Bacchus is the only international wine competition in Spain to belong to Vinofed, the federation which incorporates the most highly regarded wine competitions world-wide. It is also recognised by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) and the International Union of Oenologists (UIOE). These three prestigious bodies acknowledge Bacchus as an international reference point.
Finca Garbet 2005 brought out the best from the spectacular vineyard owned by Castillo Perelada on the Costa Brava. Lying literally on the Mediterranean coast, this estate boasts a rare beauty not often found among vine plantations. This is a single varietal Syrah, aged for fourteen months in new Bordelais barrels made of French Tronçais oak. The wine is dark cherry in colour and of high density. Its fine array of aromas recalls the estate that brought it to life (Mediterranean herbs, spices, fruits, balsamic and mineral hints). On the palate, it is fresh, generous, enveloping, and shows some very well polymerised tannins. It has a long aftertaste and offers very good ageing potential.
Gran Claustro 2005 represents the best of the Empordà. Made using the best grapes from each estate, our aim with the Gran Claustro is to create a combination of the finest sensations that this beautiful land can produce. Apart from this Gold Bacchus, the 2005 vintage has been honoured with a Double Gold medal at the Brussels World Wine Competition (Belgium), a Gold Medal at the International Wine Challenge and a Gold Medal at the World Wine Selections (Canada). This wine is a coupage of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (20%), Garnacha (15%) and Samsó (15%) aged for fourteen months in new Bordelais barrels made of French Allier oak. This produces a wine that has an intense cherry-red colour. It releases a powerful and complex aroma reminiscent of ripe fruit, with mineral and spicy notes. It is fresh and full on the palate, with silky tannins. This is an elegant wine, with a most enveloping aftertaste and superb ageing potential.
As regards the Castillo Perelada 5 Fincas 2007, this is a coupage of Cabernet Sauvignon (25%), Garnacha (25%), Merlot (20%), Syrah (15%) and Samsó (15%) aged for twenty months in Bordelais barrels (50% fine grain American oak and 50% French Allier oak). The wine is an intense cherry-red colour. It exhibits a powerful aroma, with hints of ripe fruit, balsamic notes and high roast in the background. On the palate it is fleshy, structured and balanced. The tannins are rounded and polished, and its acidity confers plenty of freshness. It has considerable personality, a lovely mouth-feel and a long aftertaste.
